#GeekSHEroes: Being a Geek

We continue our #GeekSHEroes campaign with a guest-post from Alex Pattie:

I’ve always been a dreamer. I’ve always been obsessed with fantasy stories. Dragons, dungeons, magic etc. I will always be. I am an obsessive devotee toward a select group of musicians, movies and books that have captured my heart and imagination and make me incapable of shutting up if someone mentions them in my presence.

The real problem is the geek community sometimes has an uneasy relationship with its female members. We’re accused of just looking for attention, we’re occasionally (or sadly) made to feel uncomfortable about expressing our love for certain things, human beings, characters…

I think that being a geek is all about being honest about what you truly enjoy, it doesn’t matter if you’re a woman or a man, a child or an adult. It’s ageless. It’s extremely liberating. Being passionate about something is when that something causes you to have an extreme emotional response.

That’s how I feel and I’ll never change because people can’t understand me. If I want to create my own fantasy world, I’ll do it. That’s the spirit fellas! I was taught to follow my dreams so that’s what I’m doing

Just play it cool and never change!
